Panelists:

Topic: “EMI Across Disciplines: Towards an Engaged Pedagogy”

In August 2023, National Sun Yat-sen University, with the generous support of the Ministry of Education, organized a 2-week EMI training program at the Arizona State University (ASU). 19 partner university faculty attended class observations and workshops, took part in teaching demos, and visited campus facilities at ASU. This panel discussion invites one of the participants, Professor Tsai, to speak about his takeaways from the trip.

Due to the structural power of national licensing exams in medical fields, faculty in medical universities face particularly intense student opposition to EMI teaching. Despite these challenges, Professor Tsai has actively developed and successfully taught various EMI courses at KMU. Faculty members from across the arts and sciences fields at NSYSU will also join the discussion, sharing the outcomes of employing EMI teaching strategies in their classrooms.

This event aims to foster a conversation that balances pedagogical meta-reflections with practical teaching tips. We hope to explore the many possibilities that EMI can bring to the classroom and discuss strategies for university faculty to respond to Taiwan’s bilingual policy.
