1. EMI Workshop I
Time: 10:00-12:00
Topic: Developing a Reflective Peer Observation Practice
Speakers:
Dr. Shang-yu Sheng, Assistant Professor, Department of Foreign Languages and Literature;
Director, Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center, National Sun Yat-sen University
Description:
In recent years, classroom observations have been incorporated into teacher evaluation and promotion processes at many universities in Taiwan. Fortunately, at least at NSYSU, they are meant to encourage faculty professional development rather than serve an evaluative role. In this workshop, we will discuss the differences between developmental and managerial (judgmental) approaches to peer classroom observations. Together we will reflect on how it feels to open our classroom to a fellow teacher, and vice versa, how to join the classroom of another teacher in the most unobtrusive way. Most importantly, we will explore how, in a research university, the practice of peer observation may help make teaching a more purposeful and pleasant task.
Lunch Break: 12:00-13:00
2. EMI Workshop II
Time: 13:00-15:00
Topic: Strengthening Teaching through Reflection: Approaches to Peer Observation and Feedback
Facilitators:
Elayna Ah Puck, EMI Advisor, Foundation for Scholarly Exchange
Description:
Classroom observations are often approached with reluctance and intimidation due to its evaluative nature, but they can also be a tool for development when approached with the right mindset. The purpose of this workshop is to reframe peer observations as a collaborative and reflective practice that benefits both the observer and the observee. Together we will discuss how to approach a classroom observation, key areas of focus, and strategies for providing construction feedback, with the ultimate goal of fostering an environment of growth rather than judgment.
Tea Break: 15:00-15:15
3. EMI Teacher Community
